Department of REMOTE SENSING AND GIS

Mission

Development, improvement, and transfer of methods for environmental studies with integrated use of Earth observation technologies, geoinformation systems and ground-based methods. Education of Master students, PhD students, and specialists in the field.

Staff

The Department comprises 14 researchers and specialists: a Professor, two Associate Professors, six Assistants Professors (of then, three Doctors and three extramural PhD students*), two Assistants – extramural PhD students*, three specialists with higher education (of then, two extramural PhD students). They have various qualifications – geographers, landscape ecologists, engineers, geologist and archeologist.

Structure

In the Department there are two separate research laboratories and a research complex:

Major activities of the Department:

Ø Validation of satellite data and products (land cover, vegetation indices, fire effects);

Ø Development of the Scientific-Research Complex (SRC) of Bulgarian Aerospace Test Sites (BASTSs);

Ø Transfer of remote sensing of the Earth technologies into the field of landscape-ecological assessment of the environment, tourism, and cultural and historical heritage;

Ø Assessment of agricultural crop development using vegetation satellite products with spatial resolution of 250–300 m;

Ø Geoecological study of hazardous natural processes and integrated risk assessment for the needs of regional management;

ØProviding consultation and training of PhD students in the field of higher education 4. Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Informatics, Professional field 4.4 Earth Sciences, Scientific speciality Remote Sensing of the Earth and Planets which is among the subjects of accreditation of the SRTI–BAS. In 2013, 6 PhD students will be trained in the Department.
